Placed in southern England, Berkshire is a ceremonial and geographic county and reachable via a 30 minute to 1-hour distance from London. There are no airports in Berkshire, however, the region is in proximity to London Heathrow. The county is called the ‘Royal’ Berkshire and was granted this status in 1957 owing to the presence of the largest inhabited castle in the world, the Windsor Castle. Windsor Castle serves as a royal home for close to 900 years and saw its founding in the hands of William the Conqueror. The county derives its name from the Celtic word Bearrocscir which means box trees. The county town is Reading, and Berkshire is best known for the historical battles that took place in the region including the Battle of Englefield and the Battle of Reading.

Windsor Castle is a must-see, and if you’re on time, you’ll see the opulent state apartment, chapel, banquet halls and even the changing of the guards! The historic town of Newbury is excellent for long walks and hosts the Lockinge Stakes in May. Fans of Downton Abbey will know there right at home! The village of Bray adds charm with its ancient structures and is the proud owner of two Michelin star restaurants!
