Very little of the origins of the city of Coventry is known. The Roman and Saxon settlers in Corley and Baginton are thought to have eventually expanded into the region of Coventry. While the roots of the city’s name are much disputed, the name Coventry it very likely formed from the words Coven and “tre” which is Celtic for a town. The city is home to the 13th-century legend of Lady Godiva who is said to have ridden unclothed on horseback to protest the oppressive taxation her husband and Earl of Merica, Leofric. Coventry regards itself as a city of culture, peace and innovation. The town prospered during the 15th century, trading chiefly in the woollen textile industry. Employment in silk ribbon weaving mushroomed during the 18th century and soon gave way to the development of the bicycle industry. The city was bombed heavily during the Second World War, and much of the it burned. Today Coventry prospers in the manufacturing industries of engineering, machine-tool sectors and motor-vehicles.
