Regarded as the oldest town in Yorkshire and one of the oldest cities in England, the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster is an official region of Yorkshire and the Humber and is a metropolitan borough in the county of South Yorkshire. Present day Doncaster was initially inhabited by the Romans who constructed the fort of Danum in the region. The Roman road leading toward the north passed through the town and is the A1 today! The city prospered during the years of the stagecoaches, and you can still see a few stagecoach inns like the Salutation pub today. Doncaster is also home to the world earliest known regulated horse races, the Doncaster Gold Cup, which commenced in 1766.

Two Norman castles, Tickhill Castle and Conisbrough Castle, can be seen today. Tickhill Castle served King John as a prominent fort while Conisbrough Castle is a 12th century stone castle comprising of a curtain wall, the inner bailey buildings and a keep. There are many beautiful Regency and Georgian buildings you can drive to in your Doncaster car hire. The opulent The Mansion House served as a venue to host events and was constructed by architect, James Paine. Paine duplicated a plan of the Royal Palace by Inigo Jones. While the designs for the Royal Palace were never implemented, Doncaster is home to a Royal Palace of sorts!
