Deriving its name from the Celtic words “dun” and “holm” meaning hill fort and island respectively, the county of Durham traces its origins back to an intriguing legend centred on a Dun cow and a milkmaid. According to The Rites of Durham, the followers of Saint Cuthbert were seeking a place to bury the body of their spiritual leader and respected saint. During a period of fasting and prayer, St Cuthbert appeared to one of his followers and requested that his body laid to rest in Dun Holm. The Saints tried to locate the place of Dun Holm to no avail. On the verge of giving up the mission, the saints overheard two milkmaids talking. One girl told the other that she had lost her cow and was heading to Dun Holm as she had seen him wandering that way. The monks joyously followed the milkmaid to Dun Holm. Located in North East England, the county of Durham has come a long way from its humble beginnings is a great place to explore in your car hire.
