Located in South London, the Borough of Lambeth forms part of Inner London and is a part of the county of Surrey. The settlements in the region date back to the Roman period, however, the roots of the name Lambeth remain unclear. The Doomsday Book refers to Lamhytha which is Old English for the landing place for Lambs. Until the 18th century, the region was sparsely occupied with a significant portion of Lambeth’s early occupants living by the river Thames. Owing to its closeness to London and the river Thames, the northern section of Lambert soon flourished as a prosperous production centre in pottery, glass and machine work.
The industrial area by the riverfront came under heavy bombing during the Second World War however in true Lambeth style new constructions like the County Hall soon stood tall where smoke and rubble lay. Today, you could drive your car hire by Lambeth’s waterfront for an unforgettable experience at one of Europe’s most cultural centres, the South Bank arts complex.
