Placed in the ceremonial county of Hampshire, Southampton is the largest city in Southampton County and is located on between the estuaries of Rivers Test and Itchen.

Archeological remains trace back the first settlements in the region to the Stone Age. The region later became the setting for the Roman fort of Clausentum which served as a vital trading port for the Romans. The Anglo-Saxons who followed the British established a large community in what is now St Mary’s area of the city.
